Telus Optik Local Supports Web Series Roundtable at WIDC in Whistler

As announced in November 2015,  during WIDC Story & Leadership program at the 2015 Whistler Film Festival, Telus Optik Local sponsored a special web series roundtable for this year’s eight women directors. Telus also supported a Director’s Chair scholarship for a BC or Alberta-based director developing a web series at the inaugural WIDC Story & Leadership program.

This year’s recipient of the Telus Optik Local WIDC Director’s Chair was Marie Clements who is developing a web series entitled, Crooked Bones, based on a true story of First Nations artist Connie Watts. Clements is also developing her first feature film, Red Snow which received the  2012 WIDC Feature Film Award.

Telus Optik Local’s Linda Hay and Kim Guise joined the Director’s Roundtable in Whistler along with Telus-supported web series creator, Karen Lam (Mythos) who spoke about opportunities to work with Telus Optik Local – Learn More.

Taking the discussion to the national field, representing interest in the Independent Production Fund, CTV.ca web series Space Riders: Division Earth series director, Jordan Canning touched on some of the freedoms and challenges of directing web series. IFP-supported web series creator Siobhan McCarthy (Parked) who was next door attending the WFF Producer’s Lab, also made herself available to the directors for one to one consultations.

To make that possible we provide filmmakers grants for their productions, training to maximize their potential, and distribution on TELUS Optik Tv and our digital platforms. We work with diverse creators to help them realize their vision and share their stories.

Independent Production Fund
The Independent Production Fund was established in 1991 as a private Foundation with an endowment now valued at $36 M from Maclean Hunter Ltd. The revenues generated by the endowment and recoupment from investments are used to support the production of Canadian web drama series.
