About

Marilyn Norry is an award-winning Canadian actor, writer, dramaturg, director and teacher.

After graduating from York University with a BFA in Theatre, Marilyn Norry honed her craft in Toronto before moving to Vancouver in 1987. Her work on stage playing (among others) Heidi Holland in Wendy Wasserstein’s The Heidi Chronicles and Hagar Shipley in the adaptation of Margaret Laurence’s novel The Stone Angel gave her particular insights into dramatic character arcs that span a lifetime.

A busy film career (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Nellie McClung, Little Women, Flight 93, Stargate SG1, Battlestar Galactica) has run concurrent to writing stage plays and screenplays, story editing the television series Madison, and working as a dramaturg with playwrights at Playwright’s Theatre Center where she also directed many staged readings.

In addition to acting, from 1998 to 2000 she was President of Workshops in the Performing Arts, a non-profit society that produced master classes with acting teachers from around the world. From 2004 she has worked as a psychiatric role player facilitating the training of nursing and medical students at universities and colleges around Vancouver.

In 2010 she was awarded the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award from the Union of British Columbia Performers, in recognition for the work she has done raising the status of women primarily through My Mother’s Story.

She lives in Vancouver, BC with her husband, artist J.G. Freedman.
