Iuliana Constantinescu is a director and writer endowed with a distinct style and an out of the box vision of the world. Her films tell simple human stories using a refined cinematic language and a compelling directing manner that are both sensitive and troubling. Dialogue, communication and clash of civilizations in our global world play an important role in her filmography that strives to reach universal audience and reveals a powerful and talented young artist. Immigration, no man’s land and death (Wild East), visiting student and new comer (Close Encounter), a group of five people, each speaking a different language (Company Goes Bowling – project) have the same thematics: language as a comprehensive, yet painfully inadequate means of communication for everyday experience. In dramas, comedies and documentaries, Iuliana displays an appetite for experimentation, backed up by a strong theoretical education and by numerous cultural references.
Originally from Romania, Iuliana has a BFA in Film Directing, a PhD in Cinema and a MFA in progress at UBC. Beside her independent filmography, Iuliana has worked in the film industry, in advertising, in research and in education. She has received numerous awards and her films have been screen in festivals around the world.
