“Monstrosity, for me, is always positive.” -Julia Ducournau
Bronwyn Szabo is a filmmaker, writer, and professional actor. She was introduced to the necessity and power of story-telling at Straeon Acting Studios for Film and Television in 2006, and has been cultivating her crafts ever since.
Her pandemic has been productive. Her directorial debut Mardöll, a horror short film about her haunted dollhouse, is about to make its premier at the Oregon Screams Film Festival. She conceived and made it entirely in quarantine, along with the Just Us documentary for StreetART Toronto. And as much as she does love staying home and making things, she was also thrilled to co-direct the third season of Anaana’s Tent on APTN, as well as narrate her first audiobook, Happy Hour by Marlowe Granados. Her inner 21-year old party girl was very happy to be let out!
She was recently honoured to be selected as a participant in the Fall 2021 Women In the Director’s Chair Career Advancement Module, to develop her Indigenous horror-comedy web series, It Doesn’t Show. Her heart and mind were blown wide open by the grace of the mentors and her fellow participants.
Currently, she is learning Inuktitut for an upcoming trip to Iqaluit (provided a new variant doesn’t emerge) as part of her Coordinator role for the Nunavut International Film Festival, and is planning to renovate her dollhouse.
