The GEMFest showcases films by both established and emerging women and gender diverse filmmakers from around the world. All lengths and genres are welcome. To be screened the films must have women in at least three of the following key creative roles: Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Composer and Lead Performer.

The Festival creates an informed, engaged, and supportive context for the screening of each film, as well as organizing both formal and informal meetings among participants, industry professionals, and audiences. The festival pays artist’s fees for the privilege of screening the work, and all films are eligible to win cash awards.

Through funding from Telefilm Canada, and pairing GEMFest with the Female Eye Film Festival, the WIDC Career Advancement Module (CAM) is offered to up to eight women and non-binary filmmakers during the Spring / Summer.
